Transpersonal PsychologyTranspersonal psychology is a field that interacts with both the physical and spiritual worlds, offering insights into the spiritual world based on many persons’ similar experiences. Pioneered by psychiatrist Stanislav Grof, the technique of accessing the non-physical realms is known today as holotropic breathing, but is also known in some circles as ”rebirthing” or ”hyperventilation”—rapid deep breathing while lying down comfortably and listening to pleasant music in the presence of an experienced supervisor. While the technique is controversial, and has been subject to criticism, for our purposes, the most interesting aspect is the often-reported and well-documented “spiritual experiences” that occasionally result. There are examples of persons experiencing consciousness shifts, where they accessed detailed information on internal organs, another person, living or dead, inanimate objects, animals, etc. that were entirely accurate and far beyond the participants’ knowledge or level of education. Others experienced various psychic phenomena, including clairvoyance, precognition, out-of-body experiences and former incarnations. It would seem that we have here examples of individuals somehow crossing the border from Bohm’s explicate order into the implicate order, only to come out somewhere else in time-space, reminiscent of the photons linked together across time and space in the experimental confirmation of Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle.
