Heart Math

HeartMath is a global leader in researching the critical links among emotions, heart-brain communication and cognitive function. They claim that their 15 years of research into heart intelligence, under the leadership of founder Doc Childre, provides the foundation for practical, scientifically validated solutions. These solutions are aimed at empowering people to reduce stress, fine-tune performance in all areas of their lives and foster greater health, well-being and their innermost sense of self.

This newfound empowerment is a result of their ability to access a greater portion of their heart's “intelligence” which is the objective of their method. Improved accessibility of heart intelligence prepares individuals to connect better with others and co-create a more coherent environment in the classroom, the workplace, the home, and ultimately, our planet. The heart prayer has for millennia been the main spiritual practice of Christianity. HeartMath claims that they have now shown scientifically how and why it works.

Over the course of centuries, Hesychastic practices were developed centered on different bodily sites and functions, respiration and heart rhythm being the most important. In one of the most widely known texts from the Eastern Church, a pilgrim describes his practice this way: “Later I began to practice the Jesus prayer in and out through the heart coordinated with the breathing as Gregor from Sinai and also Kallistos and Ignatius teach us. That means when I was inhaling I was looking with the minds eye into the heart while I was thinking and saying ‘Lord Jesus Christ’ and when I was exhaling, have mercy on me”.
