2. Awakening and Transformation of Consciousness

“Hinduism, Yoga and Buddhism are no longer merely Indian traditions, they are world traditions. Now they are part of the universal human heritage; even the creative aspect of these traditions is no longer an exclusive concern of India. Mankind is an integral part of India’s spiritual process.” - Thomas Berry

Practices in Ecovillages

When in Europe, a group of people interested in spirituality are asked about their spiritual path, many answers will emerge. Here are some of the ones coming up in such groups:

  • Christian (including mystic Christian, Theosophist, Alice Bailey)
  • Buddhist, of many orientations
  • Hindu, Sahaj Marg and others
  • Islam (including Sufi)
  • Taoists
  • Native American, shamanistic
  • Return of the Goddess/Flying women, Witches, Tantra
  • Nature lovers, permaculturists
  • Eckhart Tolle, The Eternal Now
  • Ken Wilber (integralists), Sri Aurobindo, Andrew Cohen,
  • Mixed, people identifying several of the above
  • Atheists

There are almost always some from each group.

Will one of the groups eventually prevail or integrate or will we see all these continue? If they are all represented in a local community how will that affect spiritual life? How will they learn to cooperate? Will they create separation or synthesis?
