FindhornFindhorn in Northern Scotland is perhaps the best known ecovillage worldwide, and has a solid spiritual foundation. It was founded by Eileen and Peter Caddy and Dorothy MacLean in 1962. They were listening within to Eileen’s channeling and cooperated with nature spirits to produce giant vegetables in the very poor soil. They also had other streams of spirituality. Sir George Trevelyan and the Christian esoteric line of Francis Bacon met at Findhorn and had their special place for meditation. Also other Christian and Buddhist groups found a welcoming place. During the years, speakers from all spiritual observations have found a place for free expression and exchange. At big gatherings in Universal Hall (a beautiful five-sided hall holding 500 persons) they often ask people to stand in the group where they belong (see list above) and celebrate diversity. At one point, Eileen gave up her role as guide and the residents themselves took over. Now a group of twelve is responsible for leadership. Before each meal and at meetings, stillness and prayer are ways to constantly stay “tuned”. Sustainability is honored through the Findhorn gardens, ecological buildings (a few but growing) and windmills. The Living Machine (designed by John Todd) cleans all the waste water biologically. Findhorn also runs a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) scheme. May East of Findhorn, originally from Brazil, has been the program director of the Ecovillage Design Education (EDE) since its beginning in 2005. Findhorn was a pioneer in teaching sustainability. Findhorn has recently been formally designated as a UNITAR Associated Training Centre under the UN CIFAL program (International Training Centre for Local Authorities) with May East as focaliser. |
