Ecovillage at Ithaca

Ecovillage at Ithaca is at the end of Rachel Carson Way in upper New York state, five hours from New York City on a hill overlooking Ithaca—a small university town. It was founded in 1991 by two single mothers who walked across the USA to find sustainable solutions for Earth. On 179 acres they have built two cohousing groups of 30 houses each and are now building a third. Eighty percent of the land has been set aside as “wilderness”. They have a CSA scheme and are building an education center as part of their cooperation with two local universities, Cornell and Ithaca College. Together with the universities they have initiated Sustainable Tompkins, a project with the goal of making their county the greenest in the USA. Residents are from nine countries and many US states. Its concept and layout is fairly mainstream. They have received a good deal of publicity in the US, partly due to a recent book by one of the founders and EDE teachers, Liz Walker. They have members from many religious orientations.
