2. Awakening and Transformation of Consciousness

Auroville

Auroville was founded near Pondicherry, South East India, by the Mother in 1968 with a spiritual base founded on Sri Aurobindo’s Integral Yoga, as a global community of human unity beyond all creeds, politics and nationalities. The building of their fabulous Matrimandir is now finished after 37 years of construction. The cupola is covered with round golden plates.

Auroville Charter 1968

  1. Auroville belongs to nobody in particular.
Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole.
But to live in Auroville, one must be the willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness.
  2. Auroville will be the place of an unending education,
of constant progress, and a youth that never ages.
  3. Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will boldly spring towards future realisations.
  4. Auroville will be a site of material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment of an actual Human Unity.

Since the founding, as a group they have manifested what it means to be the willing servant of the Divine Consciousness. They recently completed building the beautiful Matrimandir, a sacred place for meditation surrounded by 12 petals functioning as small meditation halls. There are about 2000 residents in 90 “mini-communities” spread out over an area of two square kilometers, including many traditional villages in between their parcels of land. They steward 2000 acres of land, and there are a dozen farms, many guest houses, schools and theaters. The architecture is very interesting. They have a common economy. They planted several million trees and people get around on bikes and motorbikes.
