The design of energy systems for sustainable communities will be part of an integrated infrastructure design.  The first priority is energy conservation, which involves ecological architecture, super-insulation, efficient equipment and occupant attitudes. By building to Passivhaus or AECB Gold Standard, the energy footprint saving is ~16% for new-build.

Many countries have alternative energy policies, which allow for grants and subsidies – often critically important to ecovillage design.
