Ecological Footprint of Energy Sources

Different methods of generating energy have very different ecological footprints.  In the chart below from “Our Ecological Footprint”, fossil fuel generated electricity has ten times the footprint of hydro and PVs and a hundred times that of wind.

Industrial processes can be consummate energy consumers and can also emit carbon as part of the manufacturing process.  An example is the cement industry, which emits 5% of the planets CO2.

Thermal mass is important in the efficient energy designs of buildings.  However where possible Ecovillage designers should look for substitutes, such as unfired compressed clay blocks.  There is more on this subject in the “Green Building” section.
