Effects of climate change

The impact of various levels of increased levels of CO2 and global temperature rise is illustrated in the chart aside from the Stern Review.

Another effect of climate change is sea level rise.  The causes are illustrated in the chart below from IPCC.  A recent prediction from an UK/Finnish scientific team is for up to a 1.5 metre rise in the next 100 years.

The long-term implications of temperature rises of up to 6ºC are explored in the book Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet by Mark Lynas.

The map shows not only the destruction of many coastal communities and the incursion of the sea with a 30 metre + sea rise, but also the desertification of much of the planet.  This would cause massive migration and obviously great destruction.  We in ecovillages have an immediate and exciting task of leading the way in reducing our own emissions, working within and for our bioregions and providing roadmaps towards a more sustainable future.

Adaption to climate change is a key strategy at this time.  Changes are happening and we need to adapt to new conditions while we also work towards sustainability.
